Money Monday Part III: : If You Have These 3 Thoughts, You’re Keeping Yourself Broke
If you are reading this and haven’t read Money Monday Part I and Part II, go back and do so before we proceed. You must complete those exercises in order to be in the right state of mind to take in what I am about to tell you here. If you did Part I and Part II but are still feeling financially disempowered, I suggest you reaffirm your empowered money story and remind yourself that making peace with your past financial errs is necessary if you want to feel good about money and ultimately make more of it.
The real message of the final part in my money series is that your mindset is what will make you more money. You can have the best ideas, products, services in the world, but if your views on money are ass-backwards you will most likely never make the money that you want or become financially free. (Note: I’m not talking about winning the lotto or a hefty inheritance, I’m talking about doing work that makes you an income.)
Let’s break down the common thoughts that get in the way of making money:
1. Being rich is bad. I was raised Catholic and as much as I have shifted away from the rigid Catholic beliefs over the years, one interpretation of these teachings always manages to creep up. That teaching is that having a lot of money makes you a bad person and that being rich means you are greedy or selfish. If you have this belief in your system from religion, from your parents or from any circumstances, get rid of it. It is not serving you and it is actually NOT true. Being wealthy is actually one of the noblest of goals and ways of living. I first began to see this when I went on a volunteer trip senior year in high school. It cost me thousands of dollars to volunteer at an orphanage. News flash: if I was impoverished or financially tapped out would I be able to be of service at all? No. This was the first time I started to think that my views were skewed, how the hell was I supposed to impact the world on a grand scale if I could barely afford anything. If you think that rich=evil, reframe this now and save yourself some time. Whether you are rich or poor does not determine your goodness, however, being rich gives you many, many more opportunities to experience the world, have an impact and give back to charitable causes that move you. Sorry sister, but if you’re broke, you are the charitable cause.
2. Some people can become wealthy, but I am not one of them. If you don’t believe you will ever be rich (don’t get hung up on the word “rich” either, you define your own numbers here), you better just click the “x” on this window and shut it down. Like attracts like, so if you ultimately think you will be broke or limited or “poor”, you will. If in fact, you think and act as though you are wealthy and gaining wealth, you will. This is the part that takes some patience and discipline, though. Just by declaring that you want to be rich is not enough, you must embody it. You must envision what your wealth looks like and how you will achieve it; you must manifest this lifestyle. There is no exact timeline for how long it takes, but if you don't do it you can gaurentee it won't happen. The only rule here is that you will in fact stay broke, if that is what you believe for yourself and you will in fact become rich if that is what you manifest.
3. There is not enough to go around. There are 7 billion people on the planet. There are over 3 billion people online. Do I need to go on? How many doctors are in your city? How many banks? How many grocery stores? Are there too many for all of the people? No. Again, there are billions of people in the world, so whatever sense of lack you have is completely made up and is just a story that you are telling yourself that is keeping you broke. If you have a truly valuable product or service that is not making you the income that you want, it is not because there is no one who wants to buy it. It is because you are lacking the faith or belief in yourself, your service or your product. If you really believed in it, why wouldn’t you invest in a business coach, website design or marketing help that connects you to the people who want what you have? Do you feel like your competition is too steep? Do you see others in your field doing better than you? I would bet you anything that if they are really making more money or getting more exposure it is because they have invested in themselves and their businesses because they truly believe in it. If you lack the belief in yourself, but believe in lack and competition, you lose and you stay broke. There is enough to go around and if you aren’t connecting to the people who want what you have, invest in someone who can guide you to them. If you don’t, you are depriving the world of what you have to offer and you are also CHOOSING to stay broke.
